I'm hoping to tidied up how we share data, and so suggest the following:-
Shared recorded videos are on YouTube. Please subscribe to Jacqueline Humphries channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/FinalQuack If you create your own channel share it with the others. We'll use Google+ for hangouts and sharing photos. Please create a Coder Dojo circle, and keep photos visible to the circle members only. Any member of our group who is captured in your photos or videos MUST give their permission for you to share the same. It goes without saving that unflattering or embarrassing content may not be shared. We regularly use Twitter, and you can follow us at @coderdojothurle

We've had interest from the kids in the Dojo to program games on the Oculus Rift, and work more with electronics and so we need Arduino kits. We'd like to buy an Oculus Rift development kit, an Arduino kit with periphals, a spare laptop (for kids who don't have access to one), an android tablet and an iPad for testing code and taking videos for animation and video editting.e group. As you know we offer a free volunteer-run service and so have NO money! We discussed this at the end of last term and the overwhelming agreement was that each member would donate €2 per week, if they can afford it. Three steps to register:-
1) Enroll at eventbrite http://www.eventbrite.ie/e/coder-dojo-thurles-1-oct-2014-tickets-13283508331?aff=es2&rank=12 2) Fill in the registration form online at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1l8R87D8g_yCw8Io3w4LUUj6z_2dNyXsOIVdYGQEjz0A/viewform?usp=send_form#start=invite 3) Check the blogs here for what you need to bring If you have trouble finding the links just turn up on one of the sessions, and make yourself know to one of the mentors, and we'll sort it from there. As mentioned in the post re the new term, please ensure that you have the following software downloaded and installed BEFORE coming in, otherwise we'll get nothing done and will flood the wifi at the college all downloading at same time. In addition we want offline copies of software as much as possible again to avoid flooding the wifi connection:-
1) Notepad ++ http://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v6.6.9.html 2) Last version of Scratch http://scratch.mit.edu/scratch2download/ 3) Android Studio Beta v0.8.6 https://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/studio.html 4) Chrome web browser https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95346?hl=en 5) Python https://www.python.org/downloads/ Also Scratch and Android Studio provide a wide range of online tutorials and projects, please save these to your local machine SAVE AS TYPE -> Web Page Complete, for easy access in the group. Finally Android Studio needs Java Development Kit (JDK) to work. Once you have it downloaded, try and open it, if you're getting an error it's probably that you have an incompatible version of java installed (e.g. needs 64 bit), or maybe that the environmental variables need setting. You can get Java JDK 7 at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk7-downloads-1880260.html Don't worry if you can't get it working, we can help you in the group. If you don't know whether your PC is 32 or 64 bit Hi guys, We're delighted to have Jacqueline and Matt willing to give up their time again this term, and volunteer at the Thurles Dojo. We're starting back on Wednesday 1st October, 4pm - 5:30pm in the Conference Centre at Limerick Institute of Technology Thurles Campus. Expect the dates for the first term to be as follows 1/10, 8/10, 15/10, 22/10, 12/11, 19/11, 26/11, 3/12, and 10/12. Any changes to those dates will be made in the previous sessions. Just a reminder as follows:-
This term for those of you who want to try it, Matt is going to look at Android Studio, so we'll start programming rather than using the drag and drop interface of AppInventor as we did last term. Before you arrive please have downloaded and installed Android Studio Beta with Android SDK Tools for Windows which you can find at https://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/studio.html See https://developer.android.com/training/basics/firstapp/index.html for some guidelines. If this is not for you, and it's your first time coming don't worry about it, we can play mindcraft or do something else. Coder dojo ninja's are invited to attend the web summit in Dublin 4th Nov, and some to demonstrate their code, and others to take part in a discussion. Known as the best technology conference on the planet. See https://coderdojo.com/news/2014/08/13/speak-at-the-dublin-web-summit-coderdojo-ninjas-only/ You need to apply at the above link. This is a fantastic opportunity, and would recommend you take part. |
